The Fun

Festival of Fun

The Galtres Festival of Fun has taken on a Wonderland theme for 2010 and will be packed with amazing things to do for families and young people. And bookings for workshops are now open - click here to make sure you can take part.

For the first time we are showcasing some super-talented young musicians.  Each day an exciting mixed music programme will amaze and maybe inspire you to take up a challenge.  If listening isn’t enough, then sign up for our workshop with professional young musicians Junk Drums.  They will entertain us with rhythm played on bins, buckets and bodies.  Their workshop is for 8-16 year olds and you too can share their love of music, movement and harmony.

If you prefer dancing then Salma, our professional Bollywood dancer is on hand to teach you the latest moves.  She will perform her magical dance and then challenge you to join her Indian wonderland.

The procession and this will be well worth joining - led by Damon Locker on stilts, you won’t be able to miss us!  Damon usually dresses as a clown but this year he will surprise us all with a new costume and rumour has it it’s mad! We want to showcase your achievements and so there will be a song writing workshop just before the procession, which with a bit of luck will culminate in a festival song.  We need volume so the more the merrier.

Wonderland will also feature in Adrian Spendlow’s stories.  You can hear him at different times of the day in different places.  Be sure to catch at least one because he is a master storyteller and holds younger and older children captivated!

We like dressing up and we hope you do to.  Find the dressing up box and change your look and then change your shape!  Something strange in the mirror?

Anyone for tea and cake?   You might find Alice having tea and you could join her if our fairy cake appeal takes off.  Have your face painted like a mad March hare and keep your eye on the clock so you don’t miss anything."

    Kings Traditional Fair 28 Aug 2010   11:00 to 18:00

Vintage Fairground Rides the children will love - from Huby's Brian King.

It is thought that the funfair originated in Roman times, though this is not a certainty. What is documented is that during the Middle Ages in Europe, there were chartered fairs. These were essentially trade shows that took place roughly between 1200 and 1400. They were gatherings of international traders and their wares, and subsequently included entertainers. It is likely that funfairs are the descendants of chartered fairs.

By the eighteenth century in England, the entertainment portion of the chartered fair had become a spin off known as the funfair, and provided amusement for communities as its bands of unusual humans and wild animals, jugglers, acrobats, puppet shows, peep shows and other acts travelled about the country. Funfairs introduced the first fairground rides around this time.

Meet the Magic Hatter 28 Aug 2010   11:00 to 17:00

You might see clever card tricks, the ‘bounce’ removed from a bouncy ball, a GIANT wand pulled from a top hat and much, much more. Look out for the telltale hats, madcap antics and colourful costumes, come and say hello...they may even pose for a picture!
